Skeet shooting is a popular type of sport performed at your local gun club. Clay discs launch from either side of the field, acting as the target, which simulates a flying bird. American skeet consists of shooting 25 targets for at least seven or eight different stations on the field. You’ll typically see the targets launch at about 55 mph and fly about 50 to 60 yards. The game can be tricky, because all targets must be shot within 44 yards of the flight, with one shot fired at each of the targets. The round is repeated if the first target is missed.
A typical shotgun has interchangeable chokes that can shoot skeet, sporting, and shoot traps. It is common to choose a gun choke of .005 inch construction, also called a skeet choke, because it offers an ideal spread pattern with number 9 birdshot, used in skeet.
While skeet shooting, you’ll want to wear eye protection that is impact resistant. You can choose a highlight that is orange or blue; this allows you to see the targets more clearly. Hearing protection should also always be worn when shooting guns, in the form of earmuffs or ear plugs.
There’s a specific technique, or gun movement, that is preferred when skeet shooting. Starting at a hold point, which is the spot in the field you look at while waiting to see the target, the target should quickly come into view as it flies. Swinging the gun slightly ahead of the target in flight, the goal is, ultimately, to match the swing and target speed. Instead of moving just your upper body or your arms to meet the target, you turn your entire body to aim for an accurate shot.
