Skeet Shooting vs Clay Shooting

Shooting clay and shotgun on the grass, outdoor gun range, OK Corral, Okeechobee, Port St Lucie, Fort Pierce, West Palm Beach, Jupiter, Tampa

Gun lessons are key to proper shooting techniques, safety, and confidence. And of course, knowing the game and your goal for shooting is pretty important as well. So, depending on whether you’re planning to take up the sport of hunting or you just want to advance your skill at the gun range, you’ll have a few target options- skeet shooting or clay shooting. Which type of gun you choose will also determine your game.

Defining Your Range

Practice makes perfect in any sport you choose. However, with each hobby and sport, there are many avenues and styles that suit you better than others. You may start out practicing shooting targets; however, this could develop into something more as you get a better feel for the game. If you haven’t been to a gun range or haven’t been in a while, whether you’re looking for a skeet shooting range in Florida or traditional target practice, get familiar with the many styles of guns and how they fit in your hand. Gun range practice is your first and most important step to defining your style.

The Hunter Games

Hunters need a steady hand and eye on the objects they’re targeting. Unlike a clay target, once it flushes, the hunter has no idea where it’s going. Hunters have to prepare by shooting five stand, sporting, or skeet clays. And a hunting gun is also recommended for accuracy, not a necessarily competitive target gun.

What’s the Best Gun?

There are many different guns out there, but what’s the right gun for shooting at a range? For beginners, a good place to start would be shotguns. Shotguns come in different types and can be less expensive than others. Shotguns can also be used for home defense and hunting. They are excellent guns for practice at the range. Rifles are another option with specific advantages. They’re a bit different and they are limited on the types of game you can hunt and ammunition. Specific types of rifles are for specific game as well. One rifle would be for hunting deer while another one would be for hunting rabbit.

Whether you’re looking for a clay or skeet shooting Florida gun range, what matters is knowing the type of gun you need versus what’s aesthetically complementing.

What’s Trap or Skeet vs. Clay Shooting?

Trap shooting is when clay targets are launched away from the shooting stations, whereas skeet shooting launches the clay on either side while the targets move across the shooting field. It is the original type of clay shooting, also known today as the American and Olympic Trap, with the American trap using a single launcher and the Olympic trap using 15 targets. Sometimes you’ll find different variations of the American and Olympic trap which includes bunker, down the line, double trap, and wobble trap.

Sporting clays is the third major type of pigeon shooting brought to America in 1980. On a course, sporting clays are shot in 10 to 15 stations. Some stations have two or more launchers requiring the targets to be thrown at different angles and heights. Because no two courses are the same, sporting clays can be positioned in any way.

Best Guns for Skeet and Clay Shooting

Almost any shotgun is useful for skeet or clay shooting; however, it depends on your comfort level and style what will be best for you. The Caesar Guerini Summit Sporting and a Fausti L4 Sport are excellent guns. They make the cut for competitive shooting.

So now that you have a little advantage in understanding between clay and trap shooting, you can schedule target practice at your local skeet shooting Florida gun range. Contact us at OK Corral Gun Club to book your clay or skeet shooting practice today.
